Thuraya has released an exciting new product that transforms an Apple iPhone into a satellite phone. Simple in design, the new SatSleeve slips onto an iPhone to provide a satellite antenna and additional battery life that enables telephone service and SMS text messaging outside of GSM cellular coverage. This means that you can make phone calls across the Thuraya satellite network (that covers approximately two thirds of the globe) to extend the reach of your iPhone into remote areas where you typically would not have cellular coverage.
The SatSleeve is available for the iPhone 4 and 4S with an iPhone 5 version expected to be released soon. The dimensions of SatSleeve’s main unit are 138 x 69 x 18 mm (h x w x d) and weighs 72g. The adaptor that holds the iPhone measures 138 x 69 x 12 mm (h x w x d) and weighs 27g. The SatSleeve’s standby time is up to 48 hours and the talk time is up to four hours. The initial version supports telephone and SMS, and a data version of the SatSleeve is forthcoming.
Using the SatSleeve requires you to dock the phone into a cradle, then place the SatSleeve onto the back of your iPhone. Your iPhone connects to the SatSleeve via Bluetooth. The SatSleeve app is available in the Apple App Store and is required for setup, Contact database integration, and to program the emergency button to auto-dial the number of your choice.
